DEVELOP Scholars are now endeavoring to utilize Geographic Information Science to map a
number of specific features relating to the Moon. Student learning involves reviewing the
image data from three spacecraft, reading and reviewing peer-reviewed lunar exploration
articles, and attending a number of lunar focused conferences in North America.
The project
design is aimed to supplement the vision of a human
return to the moon in the second decade of the 21st
Century. Student scholars are focused on terrain
modeling for
infrastructure, habitat, and resource exploration.
The
DEVELOP Lunar GIS Team plan to do a number of presentations
in 2006 using the image data to illustrate possible
lunar exploration and exploitation that various space
agencies
may undertake in the years ahead.
Student scholars with various academic backgrounds are participating. The Student Project
Manager is Jennifer Maggard. She may be contacted at (276) 328.6111.
Mentoring the project are: Dr. Aaron Johnson, The University of Virginia's College at Wise
as the science advisor. Jack Kennedy is the project management advisor for scheduling, cost,
and student scholar outreach. Each student scholar will gain academic credit in GIS and
lunar geology in 2005 and 2006.
NASA World Wind
version 1.3.3 (October 2005) now has the ability to
